Origami Database - Photography Guidelines

To prevent submitting incompatible images, please adhere to the following guidelines.

Requirements

We are very short of space and would ask you to keep file sizes to a minimum. The majority of the images in the database are <30 kilobytes.

  • File format: JPEG (.jpg files). The database ONLY supports Jpeg images.
  • Maximum file size: 100 kilobytes
  • Maximum width: 600 pixels (Cover scans: 200 pixels)
  • If the photograph is of a model, please try to take a picture with only the model in it.

Please do NOT upload:
  • Illustrations or diagrams
  • Scans from inside books
  • 3D renderings
  • Graphic designs
  • Webcam shots
  • Anything that you will hotlink from another website
  • Pics with heavy effects (photoshop filters, etc.)
  • Pics taken by other people or taken from other websites (unless you have permission)

Preparing your photographs

You should prepare all your photos before uploading:

  • If possible, set the jpeg compression to approx. 65-70%, because you can save a significant amount of bandwidth without any noticeable data loss!
  • Rotate them 90,180 or -90 degrees if necessary
  • Adjust levels, brightness and contrast
  • Adjust color balance, saturation and hue
  • Cut off unnecessary parts

Common Problems:
  • Photos taken facing towards the sun
While it can be interesting to experiment with photos taken facing towards the sun, the vast majority of these photos are useless. Advice: if you take the photo of the model, make sure that the sun is behind you.
  • Photos taken in the dark
You need light to take decent photos. Please do not submit pictures which are hard to see because of poor lighting. Take pictures during the day. :)
  • Blurred photos
Sometimes people upload photos where the model is blurry. If you have a blurry picture and it's not intentional, please don't upload it. Advice: try to take the picture again. If your camera has a 'Macro Focus' option then try that.
  • Photos with excessive grain
Some digital cameras can produce poor results. If the photo is extremely grainy, please don't upload it.

  • Some of the subject is missing
Very typical mistake. Part of the subject is cut off.
  • Subject too small
The photo is large, but the subject is only a few pixels. Advice: go closer. :)
  • Subject obscured by Date/Time stamp or person holding it!
Please turn date stamping off and try to take a photograph containing only the intended subject.

If your photo passes these tests please, please submit your picture! If you're unsure about file compression/grain etc, please submit your photo anyway and we will optimise your image for the you.
